My internet speed is slow
If your internet speed is slow, here are a couple of tips that may help improve your speeds. Please keep in mind there is nothing the SMASD Tech Department can do to resolve issues inflicted by your Internet Service Provider, you will need to work with them to resolve those issues. Contact information for local Internet Service Providers can be found here.
If possible, connect your device directly to your Router/Modem with an ethernet cable. This will completely eliminate slowness inflicted by WiFi. Keep in mind, some devices do not have an ethernet port.
If you are using WiFi, stay within 20 feet or so of your Wireless Router/Modem. Being too close can cause slowdowns, maintain your work area roughly 10-20 feet away from the Wireless Modem/Router.
If you are a Zitomedia Customer and your internet has suddenly slowed down, you may be capped. If you're capped, during the COVID-19 Outbreak; Zito is authorizing the removal of these caps. We're able to remove these caps if you submit a ticket.
If you have Windstream, you may be in a coverage area that has recently been upgraded. A good portion of St Marys, Kersey & Surrounding areas now has Fiber Optic services available to residential customers. We advise reaching out to Windstream at 1 800 600 5050 and asking if you're eligible for an upgrade.
Keep in mind- occupants of your home may need to stop streaming things like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, etc. while you're trying to work. Streaming services such as those will consume a good portion of an internet connection, causing a degradation in performance.
